Edison Universe is committed to inspiring educational institutions and supporting the business world. Motivated by Edison’s unique vision, unbridled optimism, and insatiable curiosity, Edison Universe is focused on nourishing the possibilities, opportunities and foundations of success to empower the imaginations and vision of tomorrow’s inventors and innovators.

This past month Edison Universe sponsored a contest that allowed students of the CAPS program to showcase their student innovations for an opportunity to win one of the multiple scholarships. A variety of students submitted their innovations, and in the end, three winners were selected.

The concept is a self-contained, decomposing latrine system that could turn raw materials such as human feces and food scraps into fuel, specifically biomethane, if in the right environment. With such an idea in mind, harnessing and using biomethane to not only pump water for farm irrigation and potentially provide a few hours of electricity at night, but this could also be a life-changing innovation for many.

Kids hate going to the emergency room. This experience is scary and uncomfortable. The Comfort Kit changes this. Designed to keep on hand in all emergency department rooms, The Comfort Kit aims to modify the way children feel about the hospital. Easy to supply and store like a first aid kit, The Comfort Kit includes a customizable logo blanket, stuffed animal, toy, and bubbles to comfort and distract children.

Custom Cartilage Implants is a multi-step process that takes a person’s cartilage cells (chondrocytes) and uses them to form a custom implant for that person. A cell scaffold made from chitosan and a biodegradable sponge material is used to grow the chondrocytes, after a predetermined time based on the type of implant, the cells will have created a cartilage matrix.

These student innovators brought to life Edison’s values by providing innovative solutions to problems displayed within their communities. With the addition of the Edison scholarship, these passionate inventors will continue to move innovation forward at the college of their choice.
